Dzongri Bikbari Trek

General Background

For those with little time and less inclination to undergo the rigours of hard mountain trekking, a trek up to the meadows of Dzongri will offer the benefits of having experienced a truly spectacular alpine trek within a span of a week (or even less). The trail runs through moss-laden forests of oak, chestnut, pine, maple, magnolia and rhododendron culminating in the meadows of Dzongri at 4,030 meters with exceptional mountain views. It is a naturalist's paradise. These forests harbor hundreds of varieties of wild plants, exotic orchids vie for attention with equally spectacular varieties of birds and butterflies. Some of the animals found along this trail are the Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Marbled Cat, Langur and the Red Panda. The program described below is planned for 8 days but it is possible to bring it down 5 days but depends also upon your fitness.

Trek Grade: above Average.
Best Seasons: April to June, September to December.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 :- Six hours drive from Gangtok to Yuksam.
  • Day 2 :- Trek from Yuksam to Bakkhim - 16 km / 5 hours. Overnight camp.
  • Day 3 :- Trek Bakkhim to Phedang - 5 km / 4 hours Overnight camp.
  • Day 4 :- Trek Phedang to Dzongri - 4 km / 3 hours Overnight camp.
  • Day 5 :- Dzongri: 4,030 m. Excursion to Laxmi Pokhari Overnight Camp.
  • Day 6 :- Trek Dzongri to Bikhbari - 12 km Overnight Camp.
  • Day 7 :- Bikhbari Excursion to Chaurikhang and Rathong Glacier (Khangchendzonga Base Camp) Overnight Camp.
  • Day 8 :- Trek Bikhbari to Bakkhim (back trip)
  • Day 9 :- BAkhim to Yuksam (hotel stay)
  • Day 10 :- Departure to further destination.
 Note:- Excluding Pelling sightseeing trek will end at 9 day. Transport fair or charge to next destination after Yuksom has to be paid by client themselves. Six days trekking itinerary can be made upto Dzongri if the client has short time for trekking.
